How Does Data Recovery Work?

Data recovery is a method used to save information that is damaged, corrupted, deleted or otherwise inaccessible to the owner. Various items might require recovery such as computers, electronic devices, external storage devices such as external hard drives or flash drives, or even damaged and scratched CDs.

Situations that require data recovery differ and also dictate the appropriate methods of saving the information. For example, data recovery is used when a laptop computer is dropped or broken and the laptop screen is unable to show information. It is also used if owners accidentally delete files or data they still need. Corrupted files, such as when a virus gets into the computer, are another situation where data recovery is useful.

Cloning Data:

A data recovery company will often make a copy or clone of the system before trying any data recovery methods. Cloning is accomplished through a specialized imaging process that obtains as much data as possible. The cloning method copies the system as it is, so the missing data is not recovered by cloning. Instead, it is backed up to avoid losing anything else.

Data Recovery by Repairing the Device:

In some cases, a repair is needed to recover data. This method of data recovery is most useful in the case of physical damage that makes information inaccessible. For example, the dropped laptop might need a replacement screen or a few replacement parts. Fixing the pieces and providing replacement parts allows the owner to turn on the computer and find the data on the hard drive intact.

This method of recovery is only used if the device is reparable, the hard drive is not broken and the damage is minor. Major damage will usually require other recovery methods because the damage is too much for a few replacement pieces to fix.

Software Based Recovery:

In the event data is corrupted, a software recovery option will sometimes fix the problem. For example, if partitions on the computer change, making it difficult to find the file due to a corruption in the location, software is used to find the data and place it in a new partition where the electronic device is able to locate it.

In most situations, software recovery is not enough to find the data. It is most useful for lost data due to minor problems.

Consistency Checking Method:

Consistency checking is the data recovery method that checks the system for consistency. This method looks through the entire disk drive on a system and then looks for anything that is odd or out of order. If the files are out of order, a list is generated showing which data is inconsistent. In minor cases of lost data, such as information lost due to a power outage or a computer freeze, the inconsistency shows up and provides the location of the information, allowing recovery by opening the file.

This method only works for minor problems. Otherwise, the generated list is too large to use.

Data Carving Recovery Method:

Data carving is another option to recover lost information. This method is time consuming and requires a great deal of energy, but it is also more useful for logical data loss than other methods. Data carving is the method in which you look through all the files on the computer and locate every file that does not have an allocated location listed. The system does not put the information because the files are placed in areas where it does not have a reason for the placement.

Once the files are found as non-allocated, it is possible to find the files on the computer and then recover them for active use. The computer then places the files in the appropriate area.

Data carving is an effective way to recover the information, but it is also one of the most time consuming methods of recovery.

Recovery Tools:

Some computer systems provide recovery tools that help owners find data without spending money if it is not necessary. If a file is deleted, a recovery tool on the computer will often find the file and recover it without requiring external options.

This method is only useful for recent deletions. If the computer is writing over the data, it is no longer recoverable. To use this method, owners simply open the appropriate computer recovery tool and put in information about the data, such as a file title. Select the file when the computer finds it and put it in a folder of your choice.

Flash Drive Recovery:

Flash drive recovery methods are similar to computer recovery, but these usually require the help of an expert. Some situations, however, are possible to fix at home.

Look at the message on the computer. If the message says that the computer cannot read the flash drive, the solution to recovering the data is simple. Turn off the computer, allow it around 10 to 15 minutes to cool down, and then turn on the computer and try again. Alternatively, try the flash drive on another computer. An overheated computer does not always read the flash drive properly, but it will read it if given a chance to cool down.

Some software is also available to recover data from a flash drive. Simply install the software and turn it on while the flash drive is in the computer. Like the computer software, it will not always work, but for many situations a software recovery disk for flash drives will find and restore the data.
