In response to the recent flood disaster which destroyed thousands of homes, and left many citizens homeless in Cobb and surrounding metro Atlanta areas, Cobb County Disaster Recovery has mobilized and is taking immediate action to assist those affected by the flood.
Comprised of more than 20 Cobb faith-based organizations, non profits, business, local government and civic groups, CDR was developed in 2005 in response to Hurricane Dennis. CDR is a volunteer-based, long-term coordination committee dedicated and determined to assist families, individuals and businesses impacted by natural disasters.
Affected Areas/Damage Estimates
Cobb Emergency Management Agency (CEMA) estimates that more than 1,500 homes
were affected by flooding caused by the floods of 2009. The hardest hit areas
were in the South Cobb communities of Powder Springs and Austell where many a
significant number of homes were destroyed with residents are currently displaced.
Rebuilding the homes and lives of those affected requires the support of diverse
community partners and resources engaged in long term collaboration.
Purpose
To coordinate long-term recovery actions/assistance for those individuals and families impacted by disaster in Cobb County.
Responsibilities
To provide assistance in flood recovery, beyond FEMA resources
To serve as a coordination point for recovery funds, in-kind resources and volunteer labor in damage assessment, case management and rebuilding
To serve as a forum for faith-based, nonprofits, civic organizations, local government and businesses seeking to assist flood victims.
To act as a recovery liaison, accountable to the public through member representatives.
